All lands within the Knuckles Massif situated above the 1,067-meter (3,500-foot) contour line were declared a Conservation Area, establishing initial high-altitude habitat protection.

The second mood-killer, however, is entirely within your control: the dreaded land leech.

Method A: The Salt Water Trick (Traditional Approach)

Mix household table salt with water in a 1:2 part ratio inside a small dropper bottle. Apply a few drops directly onto the leech’s mouth cavity. The sudden osmotic shock will force the leech to willingly disengage its grip and drop away safely.

Method B: Blunt tool Trick

Grab a flat, blunt object like a butter knife, a metal key, or the non-cutting edge of a standard knife. Apply a small drop of liquid soap to the edge to help it slide smoothly. Place the tool completely flat against your skin, right next to the leech’s smaller end (the head and mouthpart).

Slide the blunt edge smoothly underneath the front sucker. This breaks the vacuum seal and forces the leech to detach its mouth. The moment the head comes loose, quickly flick or scrape the leech away before it has a chance to re-attach itself using its wider rear anchor.

Once the leech is removed, clean the area with clean water or an antiseptic wipe. Because leech saliva contains a powerful anticoagulant (Hirudin), the wound will likely bleed freely for a little while. Do not panic—simply apply firm, steady pressure with a clean tissue or bandage until the clotting catches up.
