Following his military triumphs, Dutugamunu turned his attention to the construction of grand monuments that would solidify his legacy and the Buddhist faith in Sri Lanka. Chief among these was the Ruwanwali Stupa, a towering structure conceived as a repository for the sacred relics of the Buddha.
The Mahavamsa provides a detailed account of the stupa's construction, which began shortly after the completion of Dutugamunu's earlier project, the Lohapasada monastery. The building process spanned the remaining years of the king's reign, with the stupa gradually taking shape through the collective efforts of thousands of workers.
Tragically, Dutugamunu did not live to see the completion of the Ruwanwali Stupa, passing away in 137 BCE. However, his successor, King Saddhatissa, ensured that the construction was carried through to its conclusion, solidifying the stupa's status as a crowning achievement of the Anuradhapura era.
